What Does HR Do?

I can’t say this is a common question because most assume they know based off their own experiences. While what they know is not wrong, it is often incomplete. I have been known to say that if HR is doing a good job, much of that hard work is never seen or even thought of. When the hard work appears to be easy is when your HR team has the capacity to be more visible with the notable “fun stuff”, the culture building, the experience cultivating.

High-level I like to break down the full spectrum in 7 categories based on my experience. All are equally important pieces for companies that strive to take care of their employees.

• Recruitment

• Onboarding

• Payroll

• Benefits

• Compliance

• Offboarding

• Employee Experience

Fundamental to this acknowledgment is the significance of strategic thinking not only for these functions to be seamless but also to understand how integral it plays into the organizational goals.

The next 7 blog posts will take each category for a deep dive into thinking past the basics. The intention is to have you start to think through your team, your processes, and your employees’ perception of what is important to your organization.

I’d love to hear if you think I missed something or don’t think something should reside within the HR department in the comments. Also be sure to subscribe to the mailing list at the bottom of the page so I can keep you in the loop!
